city of Jerash [Gerasa in ancient times]. Jerash is a fine example
of the grand, formal and provincial Roman cities of the Decapolis
found throughout the Middle East. Remains from Neolithic, as well
as Greek, Byzantine and Ommayad times confer the site a close second
best to Petra on the list of favorite destinations in Jordan.
A short journey west from Jerash, through pine forests and olive
groves, will bring the tourists to the Castle of Ajloun [Qala’at Al
RAbad], built in 1184 by osman ibn Munqich, a nephew of Saladin who
defeated the Crusaders in 1187. The castle also protected the
communication routes between south Jordan and Syria, and was one of
a chain of forts which lit beacons at night to pass signals from the
Euphrates as far as Cairo. Drive back to hotel in Amman for Dinner

shelters one of the most famous mosaics in the Middle East: the
Sixth Century vivid mosaic Map of the Holy Land showing Jerusalem.
Ten minutes to the west is one of the most revered holy places in
Jordan: Mt. Nebo, the presumed site of Prophet Moses’ death and
burial place. From a platform in front of the Church built on the
site by Franciscan Monks, one can enjoy a breathtaking view across
the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea.
One and a half-hour’s drive towards south, tourists will continue

the Nabateans, an industrious Arab people who settled in the South
more than 2,000 years ago. Fortified behind a narrow, deep Siq
[Gorge] that slowly winds through a massive rock wall, the majestic
façade of the so-called Treasury [Al-Khazneh] rises up with a
breathtaking view as if out of a story book as you emerge into the
sunlight. The Monastery [El Deir] and the High Place of Sacrifice

explored at Petra. A full day will be at tourists’ disposal to
discover the perhaps most stunning site in the entire Middle East.
